Carbon Monoxide Detector

How a carbon monoxide detector protects you from a silent killer

Carbon monoxide is often known as the silent killer because it is a poisonous gas that is odorless, tasteless and invisible. Caused by the incomplete combustion of fuel, carbon monoxide poisoning is responsible for hundreds of accidental deaths in the US annually.

Carbon monoxide (or CO) is always produced whenever any fuel - gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal - is burned. When fuel-burning appliances are maintained and used properly, the amount of carbon monoxide produced is not dangerous. But if appliances are not working properly or are used incorrectly, dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can be emitted.

A carbon monoxide detector can save you from this deadly gas, which can emanate from various sources:

  • Any fuel-burning appliance. Those that are used improperly or malfunctioning are potential sources for high amounts of carbon monoxide.
  • A gas stove in the kitchen with improper ventilation. A supply of fresh air is important to help keep CO out of the house, and is necessary for the complete combustion of any fuel.
  • A poorly maintained or blocked chimney. If the flue liner is deteriorated, carbon monoxide can seep into the house.
  • A worn-out or faulty furnace, possibly due to mechanical failure. You should not service or inspect your own appliances; instead have it done by a professional.
  • Damaged water heaters, or those with improper ventilation.
  • A grill used inside a garage during winter, even if a window is left open.
  • A gas dryer that hasn’t been properly installed.
  • Woodstoves with improper ventilation.
  • A faulty portable heater.
  • And remember that warming up vehicles in an attached garage, even with the garage door open, can cause carbon monoxide to enter the home through windows or the adjoining door.

The benefits of a carbon monoxide detector are many, and they’re available in stores. More sophisticated systems are available from home security companies.
