Selecting The Right Alarm

What types of alarm systems are available?

There are many different types of alarms that can be installed in your home. These include:

  1. Alarm Sticker - This can be the simplest type of anti-burglar system. Seeing an alarm sticker may frighten the burglar into moving on to target another home or neighborhood.
  2. Burglar Alarm - A system designed to prevent burglars from entering your home, or to get them leave without completing their burglary if they do get inside your home. A burglar alarm can consist of many components, including alarm stickers, door and monitor alarm triggers, motion detectors, and video surveillance.
  3. Carbon monoxide detector - Carbon monoxide can build up in your home. As an odorless gas, it is not possible to detect it with the human nose, yet too much carbon monoxide can kill you. Common furnaces and other factors can cause a build up of carbon monoxide in your home. A carbon monoxide detector can tell you before its too late.
  4. Fire alarm - A fire alarm and a smoke alarm are really the same thing. Fire alarms work by detecting smoke build up in your house. As smoke rises, most fire alarms are mounted on your ceiling to detect smoke as early as possible. By detecting the buildup of smoke, you can be alerted to a developing fire before its too late.
  5. Motion Detector - a motion detector is a special type of burglar alarm that gets triggered by nearby motion. This is a useful addition to a burglar alarm system.
  6. Security Camera - security cameras are used to provide an additional deterrent to burglars. Security cameras tell the burglar that their every move is being watched. This increases the chances that police will arrive soon, and increases their chances of being convicted if they actually do break into your home. This is bad business for a burglar. Better to move onto another house of neighborhood.
  7. Smoke Alarm - see the definition for fire alarm.
  8. Video Surveillance - see the definition for security cameras.
