Crabgrass

Crabgrass can prevent you from getting the beautiful lawn that you are looking for. This article will discuss how to identify, and how to kill crabgrass.

Crabgrass is a weed that grows best during the warm days of summer and thrives on sunlight. It dies in the winter, and comes up again during the Spring. It spreads by seeds, and can be recognized by its seedlinks leaves, which are light green and smooth. It is a very hardy plant, and completely eliminating crabgrass from your lawn is not a realistic goal. However, there are some things you can do to give your lawn a better chance in competing with crabgrass:

  1. Take care of your lawn. Make sure your grass gets the water and nutrients it needs. A thick healthy lawn is the best insurance against crabgrass. This makes it more difficult for crabgrass to get a foothold in your lawn.
  2. Cut your lawn higher. This provides more shade at the ground level for your lawn. Crabgrass thrives on sun, and cutting it higher makes it more difficult for the crabgrass to get a foothold. Try cutting your lawn at a 2 inch to 3 inch height.
  3. Use Preemergence herbicides. These are herbicides that are designed to attack crabgrass seeds prior to their germination. Follow the instructions closely when using this type of herbicide.
  4. Use Postemergence herbicides. These are herbicides that are designed to attack crabgrass seeds after their germination. These work best when applied when the crabgrass plant is still small. Follow the instructions closely when using this type of herbicide.

Use any herbicide with great care. It may help to get professional assistance when using an herbicide to make sure that the application is done properly.
